The Judgement of Others

A wise man had a son who was afraid of what people might think. He said to him, “Tomorrow we shall go to the market together.”

They set off, the father riding on the donkey and his son walking alongside. People cried out: “Have you seen that heartless man travelling on a donkey whilst his son walks!”

The next day, they did the opposite. This time, they heard people say: “What an ill-mannered child! He lets his father walk while he rides!”

On the third day, the two of them walked, pulling the donkey behind them. People said, “How silly of them not to use their mount!”

The next day, they rode the donkey, and the indignant onlookers pitied the poor beast for the burden it had to bear.

When they finally arrived in the village, carrying the donkey on their backs, people exclaimed: “Goodness, how foolish of them to carry the donkey instead of letting it carry them!”

“You see,” the father said, “how stupid people are! Do as you think best, and don’t listen to them.”
